Switzerland

The Country

A fascinating country, filled with natural beauty; especially during the Winter.

Train Travel

Ways of getting to Switzerland by train can be found on the Seat 61 website.

Booking overland train tickets can be done through both Eurostar or Rail Europe. The latter being the cheapest way to book TGV Lyria tickets into Switzerland.

Booking train tickets within Switzerland, Swiss Rail Passes and any reservations required can be done in the UK at Switzerland Travel Centre. They can also book tickets on Scenic Trains such as the Glacier Express, Bernina Express & Golden Pass Panoramic Trains.

Train times and Tickets

Train times and schedules/connections can be found on the SBB Website and timetable downloads are available at the Farhplanfelder website, which can also be accessed through the SBB website. Just type in a location and hit search and all the downloadable timetables will appear for that area.

For the Rail Enthusiast

A comprehensive list of Swiss Locomotives by their respective railway system can be found on the Railfaneurope website’s Switzerland page. This also explains a bit about the various operators of the network and how they have amalgamated over the years.

A map of the Swiss Rail System is available on the Switzerland Travel Centre Website, a nice fold-out one is sent with your tickets if you book through Switzerland Travel Centre.

A detailed map/atlas of the Swiss Railway System is available from European Railway Atlas.

A comprehensive railway atlas of Switzerland (in German only), which includes route kilometers, is available from Schweers & Wall.

RhB loco diagrams are posted online on the RhB website periodically throughout the year.

Switzerland – September 2018 (Mega Bernina Gala)

As soon as the Blonay Chamby Railway’s Mega Bernina Gala was announced, I made sure I had time to do at least one of the weekends in September that it was operating over. As it happened the only weekend I could do was the last weekend of the event.   Flights Booked through Easyjet EZS8466 Read the Rest…

Switzerland May 2016 (In/out from Budapest)

A simple trip to Switzerland to basically cover the SBB Cargo Re4/4 turns that had started working in the December 2015 timetable change. As I left it late to book it worked out a lot cheaper to fly out and back to Budapest and do the overnight from Budapest Keleti to Zurich in either direction. Read the Rest…

Switzerland May 2015

This trip was supposed to be a trip to see the Aletsch Glacier, based in Brig, at a warmer time of year. What a disaster that idea turned out to be when I checked the cable car timings the night before we set off and found them to be closed throughout May for maintenance! To Read the Rest…

Switzerland February 2014

This was predominantly a normal trip to Switzerland and while visiting some places we’d been before there were still plenty of things on offer in the vicinity of said places that we hadn’t been. The one thing we hoped to do was visit Jungfraujoch as neither of us had been close to a glacier. One Read the Rest…

Switzerland September 2013

While this trip wasn’t a trip in its own right it turned out to be an excellent way to get into and out of Germany; and a cracking time we had too….. Switzerland Railway April 2013

As we’d enjoyed our trip to Switzerland so much in January a quick return offered itself up as a trip away for my girlfriend’s birthday. Having planned it quite well to get between the places we’d visit there were some cracking opportunities to get some Re420’s in, among other stuff. As our journey from Doncaster to Read the Rest…

Switzerland – January 2013

This trip was just a long weekend away. My girlfriend & I wanted to relax and see some scenery, mainly mountains and snow, and what better place to do it than Switzerland? We traveled out by train from Doncaster to Montreux with East Coast to London, Eurostar to Paris Nord, TGV Lyria to Lausanne & SBB to Montreux; all tickets booked directly with the carrier Read the Rest…
